The Telecommunications, Radiocommunications and Broadcasting Regulator (TRBR) has published the Vanuatu 2G and 3G Mobile Networks Closure Road Map to provide a national framework for the planned transition from legacy 2G and 3G mobile networks to modern broadband technologies.
As mobile communications continue to evolve, newer technologies such as 4G and, in the future, 5G provide faster, more reliable, and more spectrum-efficient services that support Vanuatu's digital transformation and long-term economic development. This Road Map establishes a coordinated approach to ensure the transition is undertaken in a manner that protects consumers, maintains essential voice services, and provides certainty for mobile network operators and other stakeholders.
The Road Map outlines:
The national timetable for the closure of 3G and 2G mobile networks.
The responsibilities of licensed mobile network operators in preparing and implementing their individual network closure plans.
Measures to minimise impacts on consumers, including public awareness campaigns, customer support, handset upgrade initiatives, and emergency service accessibility.
Requirements for ongoing reporting, regulatory oversight, and annual review by TRBR.
Arrangements to promote responsible management of obsolete devices and electronic waste.
TRBR encourages all mobile users, businesses, government agencies, and equipment suppliers to familiarise themselves with the Road Map and begin planning for the migration to 4G-compatible devices and services. Early preparation will help ensure a smooth transition while supporting the continued development of high-quality telecommunications services throughout Vanuatu.
